I found out about this thing called Cannon Connect through a photographer’s Instagram, Kylie Katich. She does a lot of self portraits using the app. I finally downloaded it and gave it a try. It’s such a game changer. Instead of having to get up in between every photo (when taking self portraits), I could stay right where I was. This is especially convenient when setup takes a bit longer.
The app is simple to use. You can download it on your phone, tablet, or simply plug it into your computer. Within the app there is instructions on how to set it up. It was fairly easy to figure out. Once I did it, it was a breeze to set up again and again.
You simply go into settings on your canon camera. Click the menu button and then scroll over until you see “Wifi enable”, enable it, then click “Wifi Function” and connect. The app will give more detailed instructions as you go through it, but that is basically it. You then go into your wifi settings on your phone (or tablet) and connect to your camera. It is much like a wireless printer. Then on the app you can view what your camera is “seeing” and snap a photo by pressing a button on the app. You can even manually focus to an extent. There is also a timer so you can hit the button and then place your phone out of view. I haven’t played around with it too much, so I’m not certain all the fancy stuff it can do, but this truly is a game changer.
Another cool thing this app allows me to do is transfer the photos taken on the camera onto my phone. I can export the raw files or a condensed file. I like that they give me the option to export the raw file (though I don’t know if I will ever use that because I have limited space on my phone). Since I do most of my edits on my phone using the Lightroom app, this is very convenient. It takes out the middleman (transferring the files onto my laptop and then emailing it to myself and then downloading the images onto my phone) and allots me more time to edit. Overall I am very happy with the Canon Connect App. I would highly recommend trying it out if you haven’t already and are an avid photographer.
